Winemaker David Potter
David Potter was raised in Rancho Cucamonga, CA, located in Southern California’s historic wine region, which is home to some of the country’s oldest producing grape vines.
David first discovered his true passion for wine in college. After earning a degree in Business Economics and Global Studies at the University of California Santa Barbara, David intended to pursue law. But fate intervened. During his undergraduate studies, he worked on vintages in Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz and developed a love for the craft of winemaking. Before applying to law school, he jumped on an opportunity to work one more harvest continents away in Australia. While there, David had an epiphany and decided to turn his passion for wine into a career. He applied to a master’s degree program in Oenology and Viticulture at Curtin University of Technology in Margaret River, Western Australia, where he learned the science of wine. After graduation, David spent two additional years studying and working in Australia.
David is passionate about quality winemaking and has traveled extensively to learn about techniques and terroir. He has worked at a number of world-class wineries in two hemispheres and three countries, both in large-scale commercial operations and small, traditional, ultra-premium settings. He enjoys Rhone varietal wines and has worked with some of the best fruit in the world in Australia’s Barossa Valley (Henschke Cellars), Santa Barbara County (Fess Parker, Epiphany, Sunstone), Victoria Australia (Fosters Wine Estates), and just outside of Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Chateau de Montfaucon) in France. He has also worked in Santa Cruz (Byington Winery) and Margaret River, Australia (Palandri Wines).
Returning to the States, David took a position as associate winemaker for Fess Parker in 2007 and, with their support, began crafting Municipal Wines at their facility. As Municipal Winemakers grew in production each year, David was able to open the first Municipal Winemakers tasting room in 2009 to wide acclaim. In less than two years, the winery was voted “Best Tasting Room” two years in a row by The Santa Barbara Independent. In October 2014, David was recognized as one of America’s 40 Under 40 Tastemakers by Wine Enthusiast Magazine.
In 2015, David opened Potek Winery, a namesake winery and tasting room at The Mill in Santa Barbara. While David is serious about the art of winemaking, his goals are simple; he aspires to craft wine of the highest quality that is widely appreciated. David resides with his family in Santa Barbara, CA.
